In 2016, Dale Sumner unveiled Loving Earl, a 3-D mixed media piece at 1:6 scale created in tribute to Earl Terrell, a beloved member of a small community near Knoxville, TN. The work honored Earl’s life and presence, capturing the spirit of a man remembered for living authentically and “off the grid.”

The piece was exhibited at the East Tennessee Historical Society, where it drew significant attention for its heartfelt storytelling and craftsmanship. Loving Earl continues to be displayed across the region, extending Earl’s legacy through art.

Dale’s tribute also resonated beyond gallery walls. The Knoxville News Sentinel featured a story on the work and its inspiration, further highlighting the personal and cultural significance behind the piece. Read the article here.

As the article described, Earl was “a man who chose to live life off the grid, remembered by friends for his independence and authenticity.” Dale’s piece honors that legacy, translating memory into permanence.
